Beginning Falling Leaf - (pendulum)
Performed on groomed blue terrain.

From a side slip in the fall line, display a z-shaped pattern back and forth across the fall line.  Through coordinated flexing and extending movements of the joints, display proper fore/aft pressure to regulate shape.  Use turning movements of the legs and feet as necessary to control shape and speed.  Use tipping movements of the feet and legs to control edge engagement.  Maneuver should be symmetrical with the fall line.

Advanced Falling Leaf - Falling Leaf with a Turn (The Waltz)
Performed on groomed blue terrain.

Starting from a traverse, the skier creates a “J” turn up the hill, carrying enough momentum to be able to align the skis with the fall-line (backwards). As gravity gains the upper hand the skier makes a weight transfer (lateral pressure change) and performs a backward “J” turn, in the same direction as the original traverse, with enough momentum to align the skis with the fall-line (facing downhill this time). The skier now performs the same essentials back across the hill in two big “waltzes.”

Task Criteria:

  • The skis must be parallel throughout the maneuver.
  • The turns must be symmetrical despite the fact that half are performed backwards.

Skill Focus:
Leg steering, timed with a lateral pressure change, is the defining skill blend for success with this task. The skier must move to the new outside ski and (over) shape a turn.

***Note***
All movements to the right are forward and all the movements to the left are backwards. This is only a template.  You will discover going this way or the opposite is easier.  It is up to you to master the easy way, then work on the other way.
